MP village fears reprisals after rapist's arrest

Thursday, March 13, 2003 (Kach-Noda village):

The Madhya Pradesh police have arrested those accused of raping and murdering a young Dalit girl Badami.

Seventy-year-old Puna Bai is still struggling to come to terms with what happened to her 14-year-old granddaughter Badami.

The police say the accused, Raju Tomar, was arrested on February 28 on charges of raping Badami and that his father Ramvir in a fit of rage stalked and killed Badami.

"Based upon the investigations we have discovered that kerosene was poured on her and she was burnt by Raju Tomar's father Ramvir Tomar. The police have arrested Ramvir Tomar and a case under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered," informed Roop Singh Meena, SSP, Murana.

Kach-Noda village is populated mainly by members of the upper castes and Dalits. Afraid the Tomars will take revenge for the arrests of Ramvir and his son, the Dalits have sent their women and children away from the village.

"We have asked the collector to provide us with guns," said Ram Varan Shakhwar, Badami's father.

For now, the village remains tense and the district police have increased patrolling in Kach-Noda to ensure that there is no violence.
