Eight arrested for killing Dalit

Sunday, April 6, 2003 (Nasik):

Eight people, allegedly involved in an incident in which a 40-year-old Dalit was burnt alive at Borhale village, were arrested from Nandurbar in north Maharashtra today.

The victim, Ramesh Devidas Birare, a Dalit in tribal-dominated Nandurbar district, was burnt alive by a 10-member gang yesterday due to enmity.

Birare, in his dying statement, said people belonging to a particular community had boycotted him and his family, preventing them from even purchasing essential goods, after he lodged an atrocity case against them in August 2002.

Of the remaining two accused, one had fled to Baroda in Gujarat while another was undergoing treatment.

The gang had entered Birare's house when he was alone, poured kerosene and set him ablaze. He sustained serious injuries and later died at Nandurbar Civil Hospital.
